Local Muslim group raise money for Hospices
A Muslim community group in Woking hosted a fundraiser on 19th March raising £1,500 in the process for our Hospices. Members of Ham Nawa – an Urdu term meaning ‘like minded people’ – organise various socials throughout the year to raise donations and each time, choose an organisation or charity to support.
The event this March was the fourth of a series of events held over the past few years to support the Hospices and with around 150 guests in attendance, it was a huge success. Former President of the Pakistan Chamber of Commerce, Ch. Mohammed Saeed was one of the guests in attendance, commenting that he was “very impressed” by everything on offer at the event. Prominent poets travelling from as far as Nottingham came to recite their poems inspired by Mother’s Day, themed around the role of mothers and popular singers Nafees Irfan and Rowshanara Moni also performed for the guests before they enjoyed a dinner of traditional Pakistani food.
Ham Nawa Co-ordinator and Labour Councillor, Mohammad Ilyas Raja, along with members of the committee, visited Woking Hospice to present the donation to Founder of the Hospice and Lifetime President Rhod Lofting and Chief Executive, Nigel Harding.
Mr Raja said “We are very pleased to have been able to support our local Hospices through this event, they provide an extremely valuable service to the Surrey community and it’s great to be a part of that. I’d like to say thank you to everyone involved but in particular to Treasurer of Ham Nawa, Shahida Shafiq as well as Sofia Mir, Attia Aslam and Noreen Kiyani who are all on the management committee. This was definitely a team effort and the event wouldn’t have been possible without their hard work.”
He continued “Thank you also to everyone who attended and donated so generously. Ham Nawa covered all of the costs of organising the event so all the proceeds will go straight to the Hospices.”
Accepting the cheque on behalf of Woking & Sam Beare Hospices, Chief Executive Nigel Harding said: “It was a real pleasure for Rhod Lofting and I to meet Cllr. Raja and members of the Ham Nawa management committee and we were delighted to receive their donation. We are here for everyone in the community and we look forward to building a stronger relationship with Ham Nawa and other groups to raise awareness of the exceptional care we provide and of the different ways the community can support our charity.”
