Freeman of the Borough
We are delighted that Rhod Lofting, Woking Hospice founder and Life President, has been honoured by being awarded the Freedom of the Borough by Woking Council. Rhod was elected Mayor of Woking in 1990 and launched an appeal to build a hospice in the town. After 5 years of fundraising the hospice was opened in 1996. This is the highest honour a local authority can bestow on an individual and only the fourth time in history that the borough council has given this accolade to one of its citizens.Council leader John Kinsbury explained why Rhod had been presented with the honour ” So many families have been able to use the services of Woking Hospice and we are grateful for Rhod’s vision and leadership all those years ago.”
Tribute was also paid to Rhod’s wife, Elizabeth and the support she has given over the years. Rhod received his award saying ” It is a massive honour this council has given me and I appreciate it hugely. ” Rhod also thanked the people that had helped the Hospice including supporting the Emergency appeal launched last year to raise additional funds to keep the Hospice open.
