Banana Antics on National Volunteer Fortnight
Continuing her “One of you five a day” campaign and to mark the commencement of National Volunteer Fortnight, Mary Morgan from Woking & Sam Beare Hospices was at the Voluntary Support North Surrey offices in her banana outfit, to try and encourage more people to join her ‘bunch’ of volunteers.
Thanks to our volunteers
The Volunteer Services Team have been personally visiting the shops and other departments in the hospices this week to thank them for their dedication. Activity to recognise the efforts of volunteers will continue until 12th June, when National Volunteer Fortnight ends. Without them, the service would simply not function at the level which it currently does. We are always looking for new volunteers to man the shops and help out at fundraising events as well as a whole host of other roles within the hospices.
Mary’s ‘five-a-day’ project is attempting to drive recruitment of more helpers and plays on the adage that volunteering is good for you and improves your mental, physical and emotional wellbeing, using the 5-a-day fruit & veg rule as a metaphor. She is traversing the area dressed as a banana to reinforce that message by talking to people face to face, to bring a human face to volunteer recruitment. After paying a visit to the VSNS, she will then made an appearance at the Chertsey shop, to meet and greet current volunteers and personally thank them for their contribution to the shop and the Hospices.
Whilst at VSNS, she handed out flyers and talked to the public about voluntary positions available, with special focus on the Sam Beare Hospice shops, which are located in areas across Runnymede and Spelthorne and include Chertsey, Weybridge, Ashford, Walton, Virginia Water and Egham high streets. Face to face is always the best method and Mary recruited one volunteer on the spot after telling her about why volunteering is so good for you.
Speaking about the partnership with the Hospices, Voluntary Support North Surrey employee Jenny Jones said:
“Voluntary Support North Surrey is our volunteer centre and we have offices in Chertsey and Camberley. One of our services is to find volunteers for the 300+ organisations we support in North Surrey. We’ve known Mary and supplied volunteers for the various shops and hospices for many years. Mary has made a big impact today in Chertsey in her banana suit and for us this has been the last event of a very busy Volunteer’s week. Volunteers provide an important service in our community and we know how volunteering improves the lives of both the volunteer and those in need. We welcome anyone to visit our office to find out about volunteering and will do our best to find them something suitable.”
