At the beginning of May one of the players from Woking Vets FC, Dave Powell, shared with his team mates that he was setting himself a challenge to run 100km by the end of the month.
“When Dave told me what he was planning to do I thought that’s an amazing idea and that I might take it on too, I then thought let’s make this a club challenge and set the club a target of covering 5,000 km via running, walking or cycling. I knew the challenge would benefit the fitness of the team but also their mental wellbeing giving them something to focus on during lockdown.” said Lee Cooke, Chairman and Manager Woking Vets FC “I wanted to partner this with a local charity and as Woking & Sam Beare Hospice had helped relatives of some of our players, it felt right. We chose to use the Kelly’s Charity platform as 100% of the donations go to the hospice and set ourselves a fundraising target of £1,000”.
It was soon became apparent that the players were relishing the challenge and they needed to increase the target, which was then set at 7,500 km before finally agreeing to aim for a massive 10,000 km in one month
“Matt Copp was the player who took us over the 10,000 km line with two days to spare. We finished May with 11,120 km (6910 miles) which is the equivalent to travelling to a lovely Thailand beach by land through Europe and Asia.” Added Lee “We have to date raised £1,800, including gift aid, which we hope will go a long way to help support the hospice and we would like to take this opportunity to thank all key workers and those involved with helping the community through this unprecedented time”.
“We would like to say a huge thank you to all the Woking Vets players who took on this challenge and raised an incredible amount of money for the hospice” commented Phil Wormley, Director of Fundraising “Health and mental wellbeing is so important especially during this time of uncertainty, so taking on this challenge was a fantastic idea to keep the team well and support the hospice. We are delighted to be continuing the Partnership with Woking Vets who will have the hospice logo on their kits for the 20/21 football season”
