Joanne Wright will be taking part in the Virgin London Marathon this weekend on Sunday 22nd April to raise funds and awareness for Woking & Sam Beare Hospices.
In 2010 Doctors told Joanne from Shepperton that she would not recover from a neurological condition called reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD), which causes pain and swelling of the extremities and can ultimately cause the loss of movement in the hand and foot.
“I was in constant extreme pain and was not able to look after my son Eddie by myself” commented Joanne “The Doctors told me I would not be able to work, drive or walk unaided again but I was determined to prove them wrong”.
So in 2013 Joanne found a treatment that suited her and she joined weight watchers to set about losing the four stone she had gained during her illness. Gradually building strength she began walking unaided and then started running in 2014.
The Virgin London Marathon 2018 will be the second marathon for Joanne and she will be raising £3000 in memory of her Father-in-Law Robert (Bobby) Wright who was cared for in Sam Beare Hospice, Weybridge in 2015 after losing his battle with lung cancer.
“Bobby was a very dignified and old fashioned man, a true gent, but was also one of the kindest people I have ever met. When I was very ill he was a great support to me trying to keep my spirits up” commented Joanne “Saying goodbye to him that last time was one of the hardest things I have ever had to do but as I walked away I could see he was in the very best hands. The care he received was from the hospice was truly amazing and with the compassion and hard work from the wonderful staff that took care of him, Bobby was able to remain his true dignified self right to the end”.
“We are delighted that Joanne has chosen to run for us at the London Marathon”commented Nicole Sallis Events Fundraising Executive for Woking & Sam Beare Hospices “Her journey has been inspirational and the funds she is raising for us in memory of her Father in Law will help us to continue delivering our care to patients across North Surrey”.
