To mark the start of Nutrition and Hydration Week [12 – 18 March] Dr Eleni and the Wellbeing Centre Team are hosting demonstrations of how to cook a delicious and nutritious soup that is cheap and easy to prepare and cook – the Hippocrates’ Healing Soup. This ‘Cooking on Prescription’ demonstrates how specially selected ingredient combine to offer therapeutic benefits.
Dr Eleni Tsiompanou, Consultant in Palliative Medicine at Woking & Sam Beare Hospices and the creator of the soup, comments: “Most of the ingredients in this recipe go back to Antiquity, where Hippocrates would have used whatever ingredient and meat was available according to the season. For unwell people at the peak of their illness the Hippocratic way would have been to use just barley in the soup without meat and to give it in less dilute forms as the person improves.
At Woking & Sam Beare Hospices we recognise the importance of nutrition and the need to keep well hydrated. As specialists in palliative care we do not just treat patients’ physical symptoms, we look after each individual person as a whole, catering for their emotional, psychological, spiritual and general wellbeing.”
Throughout Nutrition and Hydration Dr Eleni and our wonderful team of healthcare professionals will be demonstrating some healthy feel good options for patients and carers. As well as hosting a Nutrition and Lifestyle training session Wednesday from 09:30 – 12:30 for other healthcare professionals from across Surrey.
