Woking & Sam Beare Hospices are delighted that Downslink Challenge Events will again be supporting us in 2020 and fundraising has already begun with their annual quiz night.
The Downslink Challenge first began in 2016, members of the team used to travel down to Brighton by train and cycle back along the Downs Link and came up with the idea that they should cycle there and back in one day for charity.
“The idea for this went on the backburner until we were was out cycling one day and I got into conversation with Jim Trotter, one of the riders, who told me his wife Lisa had been diagnosed with bowel cancer the week before, the news was a massive blow” commented Steve Mc Keown main organiser of the Downslink Challenge “It was at that point we decided we would ride to Brighton and back in one day off road to raise money for Cancer Research”.
With the help and support of the local community the event began to grow. The Garibaldi in Knaphill agreed the ride could start and finish at the pub with a fun day for friends and families whilst the riders were out. The cyclists taking part in the Downslink Century,a 102 mile ride to Brighton and back, set off at 6am from the Garibaldi with another group of cyclists getting a mini bus to Brighton and cycling back the 51 miles.
In the first year they raised over £6,000 and the event has grown in popularity and increased the money they raise year on year with the addition of a Quiz Night and Gin Night.
From 2017 Woking & Sam Beare Hospices have been the Downslink’s chosen charity alongside a guest charity and to date they have raised an amazing £73,615 which is just incredible and makes such a huge difference to ourselves and the other local charities they have supported.
“On behalf of the hospice I would like to say a massive thank you to everyone involved with the Downslink Challenge for their ongoing support and the huge amount of money they have raised, ” commented Phil Wormley, Fundraising Director Woking & Sam Beare Hospices “This is invaluable to us to continue to provide our specialist care free of charge to the local community”.
This year’s Downslink Bike Ride and Fun Day will take place on Saturday 13 June and the Gin Night is 25 April you can find more information and how you can get involved here.
The Downslink Events are now very kindly sponsored each year by Trident Honda along with support from The Garibaldi Pub, Mint, Brockmans Gin and Boz’s Fruit and Veg.
