On Wednesday 15 May Kelvin Franklin visited Woking & Sam Beare Hospices to present a cheque for over £5000 which he raised taking by part in his first ever Thai Boxing Show. He was accompanied by his father in law Melvyn a volunteer counsellor at the hospice.
Having only taken up the sport in May 2018 when Kelvin heard about the show in Guildford he knew it would be a great way to raise money and an amazing challenge to take on in memory of his father Bernard who was cared for at the hospice in 2013.
“When I messaged the coaches, Mick Murphy, Chris Murphy and Paul Boosey, at the Woking Thai Boxing Club to see if they thought it would be possible at my age to take part in the show, they were really supportive and happy if I was dedicated enough to help me get ready for the fight in May” commented Kelvin “It just seemed a great opportunity to raise money for hospice, with my age and being the underdog I thought I could sell lots of tickets for the event”.
To be able to fight, Kelvin had to take part in interclub events to prove he was good enough to fight in the show, he overcame injuries along the way and took on a really tough training regime to prepare.
“At the age of 44 I officially became a Muay Thai Fighter, the fight was stopped in the 4th round and the best man won on the night. But to be honest with the amount of money and awareness I have raised for the Hospice I had already won before I stepped into the ring” added Kelvin “I promised my Dad that I would raise money for the hospice after he died because the care and support both he and our family received was second to none”
“We are so grateful to Kelvin for this incredible donation and dedication to raise money for the hospice” commented Phil Wormley Director of Fundraising “It comes at a time when the support from our community is so vital for us to continue to provide our care in the future”.
Kelvin has previously raised £833 taking part in a cross country marathon and over £6000 when he ran the London Marathon in 2014.
