On Sunday 09 July 2017 from 10:00 till 15:00 Woking & Sam Beare Hospices hosted a special event to both celebrate the care the charity has delivered but also to say farewell to their original Woking Hospice building at Hill View Road, Woking, Surrey, GU22 7HW.
Over the last 21 years, our wonderful team of dedicated staff and volunteers have delivered specialist palliative care to thousands of in-patients and day-patients. They therefore wanted to recognise these years’ of care but also offer staff, volunteers and the local community the opportunity to visit Woking Hospice before it is officially closed.
There was a special presentation from Rhod Lofting, now a Trustee and Life President who fundraised money for five years to open Woking Hospice. Light refreshments and many of the hospices team past and present were also there to welcome visitors.
The Woking Hospice officially opened in 1996, after Rhod Lofting launched an appeal for a local hospice. After losing his father, he did not want anyone else to lose a loved in such an undignified way. Since then, it has provided special end-of-life care to very ill, very frightened patients and their relatives.
Your new state-of-the-art facility in Goldsworth Park has been open and has been welcoming in-patient referrals since the end of May and the Bradbury Wellbeing Centre is open for day-patients. Additionally, the new cafe within the hospice will be opening soon, where it will be offering tea, coffee and delicious cakes, sandwiches and snacks.

It has been an exciting few days here at your new state-of-the-art hospice as our office block was delivered and assembled adjacent to the hospice. These modular buildings, that are fully refurbished and factory built, are a real engineering marvel. They were assembled in only two days on Tuesday 04 and Wednesday 05 July.
The installation of the new offices are now complete and is looking very smart. Although more work will continue as the interior and exterior of the building needs to be finished.
The project plan was designed so that the construction of the offices would only take a short amount of time to limit any disruption to our patients. Therefore, we opted for this type of purpose built modular approach because the assembly only takes two days. This was in the best interest of our staff and the wider community, but, most importantly, for the experience and comfort of our in-patients.
Woking & Sam Beare Hospices welcomed its first in-patients at the end of May and our Bradbury Wellbeing Centre, with a spa, physiotherapy gym and treatment rooms, is now open. The hospice is also looking forward to the opening of its café, which all will be welcomed to use.

We have put together a very thorough transition programme to ensure that patients are admitted to the new hospice, or transferred from the original hospice in Hill View Road, safely and with as little disruption as possible. All in-patients effected by this will have received information and guidance.

In advance of opening the doors of our brand new state-of-the-art facility in Goldsworth Park Centre, Woking, we celebrated at a special House of Lords event on Tuesday 16 May.
Held in the Cholmondeley Room and Terrace and hosted by the Earl of Liverpool the event recognised the huge achievement of our charity completing our new build project. The event was sponsored by corporate partners VMware and Intel and also supported by our appeals patron Isabel Webster, who is pictured here with our Chairman Marc Riggs, the Earl of Liverpool and Nick Barratt.
Jayne Cooper, who was announced as the permanent CEO of Woking & Sam Beare Hospices at this prestigious event, commented: “We are on the eve of a very exciting advancement in specialist palliative care. Our new build has been designed to ensure we can offer the very best of care to our patients, but in an environment with the highest possible standards. I could not be prouder of what we have achieved. Our new hospice really will put Surrey on the map as a leader in specialist palliative care for terminally ill patients and those with life-limiting illnesses.”
The hospice, which delivers care to over 1,400 patients and their families each year across six Surrey Boroughs, opens its doors to its first in-patients at the new hospice on Tuesday 23 May. The Bradbury Wellbeing Centre, which has a physiotherapy gym, spa, beautiful day room with fully equipped kitchen and consultancy and counselling rooms, will be open to day patients by Tuesday 30 May.
Natalie Stephens, Group Managing Director of Optichrome pictured left, attended the event to shared her personal experience of our hospice care. In an emotional speech she said: “Losing Dad so suddenly and having to step into his shoes and take over the business was overwhelming. It was Fiona, one of the wonderful counsellors at Woking & Sam Beare Hospices, that got me through and who gave me the skills to support my three children with their grief.
“Going to the hospice on a weekly bases really opened my eyes. I had previously thought that it is a place people go to die. This is not the case at all. It is warm and vibrant, with the most incredible team of staff and I am delighted to be able to support this wonderful charity.”
Natalie, whose Father sadly passed away in 2013, was one of approximately 200 guests at the House of Lords event. It was a wonderful evening with many fantastic supporters.
Jayne Cooper added: “I would like to thank Natalie Stephens of Optichrome for speaking so beautifully. On behalf of the hospice I thank the Earl of Liverpool for hosting our event, Isabel Webster for her support and our event sponsors VMware and Intel. None of what we have achieved would be possible without such a dedicated and passionate team of staff and wonderful volunteers, as well as the generosity of so many supporters. To all of you, I simply say – thank you.”

We’re delighted to announce that your brand new state-of-the-art hospice has passed the England independent regulator of health and adult social care’s inspection.
The Care Quality Commission [CQC] ensures that health and social care services across England provide people with safe, effective, compassionate and high-quality care. They have expected the new build at Goldsworth Park Centre, Woking, which means that we can now register the new facility and by the end of May patients can start to be admitted.
Jayne Cooper, Interim CEO and Director of Nursing, commented: “As a patient-centred charity, those we care for and their families are at the heart at everything we do. So I am exceptionally proud to have all our hard work validated by such a positive CQC inspection.
“We could not achieved all we have without such a fantastic team of staff and volunteers, but also because of the generosity of the communities across Surrey who have supported our New Build Appeal. I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you.”
