Raffles and draws
- A “raffle” is where prizes are donated, and you sell numbered “cloakroom” style tickets to give people the chance to win the prizes. But this must be done at a particular event, sold to the people attending it and then drawn “there and then”. The winners must also be made public after the event. Hosting such a raffle is is classified as a private lottery and there are no other legal requirements.
- If you want to pre-sell tickets over a period of time, with the draw taking place on a future date, you will require pre-printed tickets, and need to be registered under the Gambling Act 2005 with your Local Authority. Woking and Sam Beare Hospices are already registered to administer our own Lottery and Car Raffle, but you would need a separate license.
To avoid any confusion we therefore kindly ask you to email our fundraising office or call 01483 881752 before you start any kind of raffle or draw. We can then advise you on all the legal requirements needed to ensure you organise a successful fundraising event.
