Woking Asain Community Dinner Raises 100k
Attended by The Rt Hon. The Baroness Warsi and Jonathan Lord MP, the Woking Asian Community came together at a special dinner, on Tuesday last night 13 December, in support of our New Build Appeal.
The Woking Asian Community is keen to support our cause, which they believe has important significance in their local area and throughout North West Surrey. We were thrilled to receive notification from the community earlier this year to let us know that their aim is to raise £221,000 in just 18 months to help the Hospices to build the new facility in Goldsworth Park, specifically to fund a Multi-Faith Retreat and two extended in-patient and family rooms. The Committee announced that more than £91,000 has been raised so far, thanks to the generosity of all who attended the event at the HG Wells Centre in Woking, as well as other donations and activities which have been taking place.
Jayne Cooper, Interim CEO and Director of Nursing for Woking & Sam Beare Hospices, commented: “It was a fabulous evening. A real coming together of people from across the area. As a charity that receives the majority of its income from fundraising and community support, I cannot thank the Woking Asian Community Committee enough for all they did to organise this event and for the extraordinary commitment of the community to ultimately raise £221,000.”
Baroness Warsi spoke movingly at the dinner and urged us all to support the work of hospices, as they care for our patients and families at a time when palliative care services are in increasing demand.
Jayne Cooper added: “We are a patient led charity and our patients are at the heart of everything we do. We are committed to meet the needs of all communities across North West Surrey and we are working to ensure we do as much as is practically possible to ensure the Hospice’s services are open and accessible to all, whether this is as an in-patient in the hospice or delivered in our patients’ homes through our community teams. And we could not do this without the generosity of our local communities – thank you.”
Shahid Azeem DL, member of the Woking Asian Community committee, concluded: “It is good to work closely with the Hospice to put together such an event. The Asian community in Woking and beyond has really stepped up to this challenge and we are so thankful to them for the successful outcome of our first gala fundraising event”.
