Walking in the Air for our Hospices
80 year old Dennis Sparks from Egham fulfilled his life-long ambition of completing a wing walk to raise funds for our Hospices last month. Strapped to a 1930s airplane and flying at 500ft he raised an incredible £1383.67 having orginally only set himself the target of £500. It was Dennis’ way of thanking us for caring for his wife during her last stages of bowel cancer.
“I thought it would be a great way to raise money for the Hospices whose staff and volunteers looked after my wife Freda in her final months. They supported the whole family during this difficult time and this is my way of thanking them. They were available 24 hours a day and if you needed them at 2am they were there. It was an unbelievable service and they were lovely girls,” said Dennis.
Under the guidance of instructors from wing walking company Aerobatic Tactics at the Chiltern Air Park in Oxfordshire, Dennis was in the air for around 15 minutes before the plane came back in to land. His family and friends watch on and afterwards had a big celebration where they viewed the special wing cam footage. Having thoroughly enjoyed the experience Dennis said he would even consider doing it again.
Community Fundraiser Chiara Cadei was also there and said “This was such an amazing challenge and it was great to see Dennis complete something he’s always wanted to do and we’re really pleased that he has decided to use it to help raise funds for the Hospices.”
Having recently turned 80 years old, Dennis has always led an enthusiastic and active lifestyle. With a long career within the motoring industry, he has worked on everything from super cars to historical vehicles and his claim to fame is supporting daredevil actor Steve McQueen for the filming of Le Mans in 1970. Dennis was invited on set of the 1971 auto-racing movie to modify cars for the cameras and enjoyed many a drink with Steve after the days filming.
