Story from the Heart – Anna
Our Counselling team provides over 2,000 one-to-one sessions of bereavement counselling to people at all stages of the patient journey; including support for carers and relatives. There are also social clubs for bereaved adults and groups including; ‘Footsteps’ for young children and the ‘Tommy D’ for teenagers and young adults. These clubs are places where there is no pressure to talk about the bereavement but everyone has been through something similar and so will understand what their peers might be going through.
Anna lost her father suddenly when she was just 15 years old. She has been attending Tommy D to help her cope with the loss. She explains:
“My Dad, aged 46, was a healthy, happy man who loved life and found positives in everything. On the 10th October 2013, he went to A&E, in severe pain and got admitted immediately to hospital where in the next few days it was found that he was terminally ill. He died on the 19th October, only 9 days later. Saying good bye was the most horrible thing I have ever had to do. My attendance at school rapidly dropped, and I found myself despising life; I also began having regular panic attacks. Then I found ‘Tommy D’, which is a group run by the Hospices for young people. It is a place where you get so much support from peers who really understand, and we can all talk openly about our feelings and experiences, in a safe and comforting environment.
I can honestly say I don’t know what I would have done if I hadn’t found the Tommy D group. After only a few months I was openly talking about my feelings and the loss of my Father, and felt trust in everyone there. As well as helping me mentally and helping me accept what had happened, I also made amazing friends who I see outside of the group meetings and know I can talk to at any point.
My loss of my Daddy was heart breaking, and a horrific time in my life, but because of Tommy D (and of course my family and friends) I can now say that I am happy again.”
Group counselling sessions at Woking & Sam Beare Hospices are already very popular and the counselling rooms being built at the new hospice will enable the team to see more clients and patients than ever before.
Many thanks to Anna for providing us with her testimonial. Featured is Anna with her late father, Ian.
