Our Hospice100 are gearing up…

As one of the charities for the new Surrey Half Marathon, taking place on the 9th March, we were delighted when some of our runners dropped in for a pre-race briefing.

A total of 30 runners have now joined our team, and there was much excitement as T-shirts were handed out. The runners were treated to a presentation from the Running School in St John’s, which included advice on nutrition, planning for the day, race day tips and a running stance analysis.

Marc Carey, 42 from Knaphill is running in memory of his mum. “I want to raise as much money as possible for all the hard work and care that the staff of Woking Hospice gave her, and still give on a daily basis to all of their patients. She passed away peacefully last year, and my family and I will never forget the kindness they showed to all of us. I haven’t run for many years, but it’s great to be back running, and have a challenge to work towards.”

Husband and wife Andy and Krista Lougher from West Byfleet have completed training runs up to a 10K distance, so are feeling confident for the day. “We have to take it in turns to train, as we have two young children, but we always support the Hospices, and after taking part in the Santa Fun Run thought we would move on to a harder challenge!” added Krista.

The Go Go Girls, Nikki Sherman, Roxy Adams, Lyndsay Deeves, Gill Muller von Blumencron and Leena Amin, are all ‘Mums’ from local school St Andrew’s. They all train together and wanted to raise money for a local charity and therefore chose the Hospices.

With Hospice staff Director of Clinical Services, Rachel Hill and Community Palliative Care Nurse Specialist, Rupert Devereux leading the way, the team are hoping to stand out as they run the 13.1 miles.

Preparations for the day are well under way, with road closure announced and thousands expected to line the street on March 9th to support the runners. We are hoping to put a special cheer squad together to support our runners on the day. We will be placed at key points along the route and have banners and flags to make sure we are seen.
