Dragon Boat Fun Day a Monstrous Success

Our annual Dragon Boat Fun Day, sponsored by Trident Honda, took place on Sunday 3rd July 2016 at Goldsworth Park Lake. In the Dragon Boat races, 12 boats took to the water attempting to paddle their way to victory and raise funds for the hospices at the same time.

Characters ranging from nuns to pirates and princesses could be seen strolling around Goldsworth Lake as one by one they took their turn to race each other. It was a nail biting finale as the winning team, ’The Reg Varney Rowing Club’, paddled across the finish line to grab the gold just ahead of ‘Echo & The Reverbs’, who took silver, and ‘Pedalo et Gateaux’, who took bronze. Experience the fun in our highlights video here.

The rest of the fun day was also a huge success, with face-painting being ever-popular, the BBQ almost selling out, and a queue for the bouncy castle  from the moment it opened. The WSB Plant Tent was also a hit with visitors to the event and the organisers are very grateful to the local garden centres, nurseries, and individuals, who donated the beautiful range of flowers, pot plants, and saplings, so that every penny raised on the stall could go directly to supporting the Hospices. Entertainment in the form of traditional Chinese dragons and dancers from the Chinese Association of Woking amused spectators who had turned up to watch the event, which was taking place just a stone’s throw from Denton Way, where the new hospice is currently under construction.

Events Manager Danielle Le Cuirot said:

“It was great to see a fantastic turn-out with such incredible support from the local community. All of the teams taking part really enjoyed themselves, and it was certainly a very exciting ‘Grand Finale’ – you really couldn’t tell who crossed the line first! Thank you to all our wonderful volunteers who, as always, we really couldn’t do this without. Also to the many individuals onsite helping to make the day a huge success – WSBHospices staff, Goldsworth Park Community Association, Woking Sea Cadets, and Dianthus Trading for the BBQ! Last, but not least, to Trident Honda who sponsored the event and took part in the racing with their team ‘Trident Otters’ – thank you for your support and for showing such great sportsmanship. The day has become a popular fundraising event within the community and we can’t wait to be back even ‘bigger and better’ next year!”

The total raised on the day from the activities and stalls was £5,131. Sponsorship money is still being collected and so the amount raised altogether is as yet unknown. If you took part in the races and haven’t yet handed in your collected cash, don’t forget to do so soon!
