Community Nurse receives prestigious award

Clinical Nurse Specialist at Woking & Sam Beare Hospices, Deborah Worwood, has been recognised for her commitment to high standards of patient care, learning and leadership as she was awarded the prestigious title of Queen’s Nurse, by The Queen’s Nursing Institute (The QNI).

The QNI’s Autumn Awards Ceremony was held at the Royal Garden Hotel in Kensington on Monday 9th November where 111 new Queen’s Nurses were welcomed. The award, founded in 1994, is for those who have given service to patients and the profession over and above the call of duty and have made a particularly distinguished contribution to the health of people in the community. The title of Queen’s Nurse is open to community nurses with more than 3 years’ experience and managers and patients provide feedback about applicants, which is assessed along with their application.

There are a total of 820 Queen’s Nurses in England, Wales and Northern Ireland who are recognised as pioneers of nursing excellence and are often called upon to contribute to policy and practice development, and as experts who are shadowed by some of the most senior figures in healthcare policy.

Winners and their guests were welcomed to the Awards Ceremony by Kate Billingham CBE, Chair of the QNI’s Council and by Dr Crystal Oldman, Chief Executive. Deborah Worwood said “I’m incredibly honoured and grateful to receive the Queen’s Nurse Award. I’ve been working at Woking & Sam Beare Hospices as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in the community for the last five years and I am proud to know that my contributions make a real difference to people’s lives.”

Dr Crystal Oldman, Chief Executive of the QNI said “Congratulations are due to Deborah Worwood for her success. Community nurses are expert professionals who make a vital contribution to patient health and wellbeing every day and as a national charity the QNI can support them in delivering excellent patient care in their local communities. The Queen’s Nurse title is a key part of this and we would encourage other community nurses to apply.”
