Charity of the Year at British Gas Staines

The Fundraising Department were at British Gas in Staines on 9th March to find out the Hospices had won the British Gas Staines’ charity of the year for 2016 after beating 14 other charities that were shortlisted. A stand was set up in the foyer of one of their buildings, where staff along with Hope, the New Build Appeal Mascot, spent the day encouraging employees to learn more about their new charity of the year.

The Hospices were put forward for consideration by Cass, an employee at British Gas who felt that we would be a deserving winner. She said

“When my mother was very ill staying at St Peters Hospital, she asked to be moved to a Hospice. I looked into a couple of local ones and Woking Hospice stood out to be the best environment for her. The staff are like angels and nothing is too much trouble, they looked after my mother so well in the last couple of weeks of her life and they looked after me too. They are so caring for their patients and the families and work so hard to provide the best care and support; even providing me with counselling and next steps to help me in every way they could.

Suggesting the Hospices as the charity of the year was my way of saying thank you. We will be having numerous in house charity events including bake-offs and cake sales to raise money. British Gas staff will also be participating in many of the Hospices events, as well as volunteering for them, as British Gas Staines employees receive free volunteering hours each year, so it’s a great opportunity to use them whilst supporting a very worthy charity.”

Community Fundraiser, Chiara Cadei said “We are delighted to have been chosen as British Gas Staines’ charity of the year. It’s a fantastic opportunity for us with a great company, we’ve had lots of interest from the staff already about getting involved in events and volunteering and are looking forward to working closely with British Gas Staines.”
