Celebration party held for volunteers

Woking & Sam Beare Hospices held a celebration party at Woking Hospice for volunteers from their Knaphill Home Interiors shop, to thank them for their time and recognise their hard work. Volunteer Services Manager, Mary Morgan was also at the celebration along with Hospice Founder & Life President Rhod Lofting and full time staff from the Knaphill store. There were volunteers old and new including Jean Kaine and Ann Stapleton who have been volunteering with the Hospices for over 40 years combined.

Both Jean and Ann continue to volunteer even now, at the Furniture shop in Knaphill doing everything from working on the tills and replenishing products to helping to design window displays.

“Today’s celebration has been wonderful, we’ve all really enjoyed it.” said Jean. “I first began volunteering with the Hospices in 1994 at the new shop in Chobham, I took a break for about a month after the store closed but shortly after, the shop in Knaphill opened in 1999. Along with the other ladies who I volunteered with, we were asked to continue volunteering at the new store and I have been doing it ever since.”

She added “What I enjoy most about volunteering is meeting new people, I’ve made lots of friends during my time as a volunteer and it’s a big part of my life, it’s an incentive for me to get up every morning. My husband, Harry was cared for at Woking Hospice in 2006 for five weeks before he passed away and the care he received was incredible. Everyone at the Hospice was so supportive including Rhod who came to see Harry regularly and volunteering is my way of saying thank you and giving something back.”

Mary Morgan, Volunteer Services Manager said “We wouldn’t be able to continue to provide our vital services and support to local people and their families without the help of our volunteers so we want to make sure they feel valued for everything they do for us. Today’s celebration was lovely and I’m glad all our volunteers enjoyed it.”
