Are you a Complementary Therapist?

We are on the look-out for trained and qualified Complementary Therapists to join a team of volunteers providing holistic treatments for our patients and their relatives. We would like anyone who is certified as a Massage Therapist, Aromatherapist, Reiki Master or Reflexologist, to come forward if they feel they have some time to spare during the week to put their talents to superb use.

The treatments form the main foundations for the ‘Wellbeing’ aspect of care, provided free of charge, and are used for symptom or stress relief as well as to bring comfort to people coping with life-limiting illnesses; including close relatives, both before and after a bereavement.

Roger has recently been diagnosed with suspected Motor Neurone Disease (MND) and was referred to the hospice by his GP. His regular visits to the Day Care centre for reflexology have enabled him to continue many tasks virtually as normal, despite progressing symptoms. He explains: “What the Complementary Therapists do really helps with my feet and the numbness. It means that for now I can still drive without problems. I believe they cater for almost anything, a wide range of people and illnesses. It is truly lovely and I look forward to my cake and de-stressing massage every week. The benefits are lovely but to be honest the people are even better!”

Nicola Morgan-Savage, Complementary Therapist at Woking Hospice, talks about what the team requires: “We are looking for people who can commit to a fairly regular working pattern with an up-to-date, recognised qualification. These treatments are so valuable for the people we care for. Sometimes it can break the barrier between fear and excitement of coming in to the hospice, when they find out that actually it’s a really lovely place to be. We have increasing demand for our services so we would really appreciate any time that people can give.”

Potential volunteers are encouraged to contact Gary Wood, Volunteer Services Operations Manager if they feel they can offer their time, expertise and a friendly smile. If you have a qualification in something that is not mentioned then feel free to get in touch to see if it is a therapy that can be included into the programme.
