Sam Beare Hospice received an impressive £13,000 from fundraiser Anne Gray, the proceeds of a party sponsored by David Lloyd, Weybridge.

Anne, 51 a fitness instructor at the club persuaded staff and members to get involved in a charity party. She was amazed when proceeds from ticket sales and the auction were added up and the total was announced.

She explained “I was so amazed and impressed at the care provided by Sam Beare when I was diagnosed with secondary breast cancer in November 2009. They contacted me to see if there was anything I needed and helped enormously when I was almost too ill from the chemotherapy to attend my own 50th birthday party! It was late on a Saturday afternoon but they sorted out my medication enough to get me up on my feet and I was able to party ‘til the early hours!

When the cancer came back for the third time, they found me a counsellor to help with the huge emotional pressure of living with cancer who has proved to be a staunch ‘rock’. I just want to give something back.”

The Management and staff of David Lloyd, headed up by Sue Moss General Manager, Matthew Goad Ops Manager and Rob Sambles F&B Manager were very supportive of the event with the venue and food donated and staff working the night for free. Members also helped out on the evening with Fab Macarian, Jen Preston and Lisa Woodward being particularly effective with raffle tickets sales!

Anne will carry on with fundraising for the Hospice and has organised a Spin-a-thon planned at the club at the end of May.

Congratulations and thanks to David Estall and Adam Birch who took part in the Scally Rally in Ireland to raise funds for Sam Beare Hospice. Competing cars must cost less than £100 and complete a journey from Belfast to Kinsale, so it's challenging to finish at the best of times. David and Adam had an eventful time as they went through 3 cars before crossing the finish line...the first car broke down at Nantwich on the way to the ferry; they bought another one in Belfast and resprayed it just in time for the start. That one broke down at Westport, bought another one which just made it to the finish line. And they won the 'Spirit of the Scally Rally' award! So far they have raised £790 on JustGiving, plus cash in a couple of collecting tins. Well done indeed!

Their online album of the adventure is available at www.pbase.com/davidestall/scallyrally2010

Alistair Peters and Caroline Hickey who work at the Red Lion in Horsell took part in the recent Hospice adventure weekend, traversing 160ft between the two towers in Dukes Court in Woking. They were thrilled to raise a total of £782 from regulars of the pub who dug deep to support them. They are still hoping to reach their £1,000 goal and have a few more monies to chase.

Alistair commented that it certainly was one way to wake up on a Sunday morning! and Caroline added " Alistair went first and needed an encouraging push. But I loved it and would like to a bungee jump next time. All the regulars from the pub were so generous it really spurred us on."

The pub is hoping to get involved with other fundraising activities for the Hospices. For further information on this popular local pub visit www.redlionhorsell.co.uk
