Geoff's London Triathlon for Sam Beare 30 July 2011

Geoff Hurst will be tackling the full London Triathlon distances of 1,500m swim, 40K cycle and 10K run in memory of his friend Dave Scrutton who passed away in 2010. Dave inspired Geoff to to take up cycling and running in 2003 and once these two were established it was a simple step to triathlon. Geoff hasn't undertaken a triathlon since the Viltruvian Half Ironman about 2 years ago, so is now in full training. His blog www.beastingblog.webplus.net contains many funny stories of his efforts so far.

Radio Marathon for Sam Beare Hospice

22 April 2011

Brooklands Radio presenter Lance England is planning a 24-hour broadcasting marathon to raise money for Sam Beare - the internet station's adopted charity. Lance 50, will switch on his mic on Good Friday morning immediately after the midnight news and stay on the air until the next midnight bulletin.

To help him keep going he has been invited to breakfast by the Best Western Ship Hotel, in Weybridge, where he will enjoy a full English fry-up as he broadcasts.

During the long day Lance will be playing the all-time top five songs of staff in local shops and businesses and of other Brooklands Radio presenters, many of whom will be joining him on air.

Donations for his efforts can be made at Just Giving: http://www.justgiving.com/Lance-England.

Lance, whose day job is running post-production specialists Gemini Audio, says: “There’s no way that I could ever run a marathon, but 24 hours on the radio seems like a great way to raise funds for a very local and deserving cause.

“The Sam Beare Hospice is just across the street from our studio, and the care and support that staff and volunteers give is quite incredible. It costs a great deal of money to keep the hospice fully open and we want to do all we can to raise as much as we can in these difficult times. The hospice stands on the site where I started in radio – back  in 1971 on a hospital station. So I’ve had 40 years of practice for the big day in April.”

We're off to Kilimanjaro - February 2011

Carol Swann and Carrie Wheeler from Woking will be climbing Africa’s highest peak in February 2011 to raise money for Woking Hospice. Carol from Maybury explained  “We have wanted to do something that would partially reflect the wonderful and mportant service that Woking Hospice and all hospices provide for the community. We have both been personally touched by the service that Woking Hospice provides and wanted to make some contribution towards the continued provision of the Day Care facility.”

Kilimanjaro is Africa's highest peak at 5,895 metres and the two women will fly out to Tanzania on 23rd February to start the seven day trek via the Lemosho route, one of the toughest. They have paid for the entire trip in order that every pound raised would go directly to the Hospice.

To kick start their fund raising they held a 'Dance and Ploughman's Supper' evening in November which raised a fantastic £3,200 towards their target and have now raised over £5,000. Carrie added “We couldn't have done it without the support of all those people who bought tickets, raffle tickets and who donated their precious time, prizes and services to help run the event, people have also donated so generously.”

Stuart Farquharson is asking for donations as he takes part in the GRIM CHALLENGE! GRIM is held over the Army's vehicle testing tracks so expect it to be interesting! You run, wade or crawl over the 8 mile off road challenge...sounds delightful especially as this all happens on the 5th December, so I am sure the weather does not help.

Thames Park Walk  www.chrisandstevetpw.blogspot.com March 2010

Beginning this March, Chris Hacking and Steve Hickford will be walking the Thames Path in order to raise money for Woking Hospice.

Chris and Steve have been friends for many years and, having retired at about the same time, they took up walking as a great way of exploring the countryside and keeping fit.

Their latest venture - and the opportunity to sample a new series of beers - is the Thames Path Walk. This walk covers 184 miles from the source of the Thames in a remote Gloucestershire meadow all the way down river to the Thames Barrier in east London. They are planning to complete the distance in about 15 stretches of 12 miles each. Given the other pressures of retirement, this will take them several months to complete, but they'll be keeping you up to date with their progress after each stretch on their blog.

Your sponsorship of their walk will contribute to the essential additional funds and full re-opening of this important community service. If you would like to support them please visit their Justgiving Site
