Woking Hospice
Introduction to Woking Hospice
At Woking Hospice, our aim is to support you throughout your student placement, and we hope this information will act as an introduction to our services.
The hospice has ten in-patient beds, and places for fifteen day-care patients on four days a week. Patients are admitted for symptom control, for respite care, palliative rehabilitation, psychosocial support or for terminal care. The patients are adults who have a terminal disease, and they may be referred from hospital or from the community by their doctors, Macmillan nurses, GP's, or district nurses.
Palliative care provides a unique opportunity to provide truly holistic care, the physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual aspects of each patient and their relatives being afforded equal importance.

Duty Times: You will be supernumerary to staff numbers.
Early 07.30am - 15.30pm
Late 13.00pm - 21.00pm
Night 20.30pm - 08.00am
Requests: Please let a member of staff know as soon as possible if you wish to request a specific shift, day off or study day. We will do our best to accommodate your request.
Mentors and Assessors: We allocate a mentor to you before your placement commences. Your duties will shadow theirs as much as possible, but if you do have some requests that differ, we will make sure that another staff member supports you for these shifts. You may, of course, change your mentor if you wish.
Your assessor and mentor will be qualified in teaching and assessing (ENB 998 or Mentorship Preparation course) and will liase with you about the timings of reports and the aims and objectives of your placement.
Clinical Experience: You will have the opportunity to gain a wide range of experiences at the Hospice. Wherever possible, we will allow you to observe investigations, scans and procedures taking place. There is a link corridor to the Woking Community Hospital, whose facilities are used by the hospice.
Your mentor will ensure that you are confident in carrying out procedures that you meet on a day-to-day basis.
Facilities available for staff and students:
Transport: Free parking is available outside the Hospice. We are situated within five minutes' walk of the railway station, and the main road (a few hundred metres away) is on a main bus route.
Food and Drinks: There is a small kitchen area available for staff use, to make beverages and snacks, with a microwave and toaster. There is no dining room at the hospice, but meals can be purchased from the dining room at the Woking Community Hospital, or your meals can be ordered from there in advance and will be delivered to the Hospice.
Other Facilities: A payphone is situated in the reception area.
Learning Resources: These are available in the Library-Common Room.
National Policies:
- NMC Policies for example Confidentiality, Standards for the administration of medicines, Scope of professional practice are available at the Nurses' Station
- Trust Policies are also held at the Nurses' Station
- Royal Marsden Manual of Clinical Nursing Procedures - Is in the Clinical area of the Hospice
- Books on specialist areas of palliative care are in the library
- The International Journal of Palliative Nursing and Palliative Care Today are taken by the hospice.
We hope that your time at the Hospice will be as pleasant and educational as possible. Every effort will be made to make your placement problem free, but if you do encounter any problems, do not hesitate to speak to your mentor, or to the Ward Manager or the Practice Development Nurse.
After your placement, we would value your feedback, and this will be discussed during your assessment.

Multidisciplinary
Doctors, Community Clinical Nurse Specialists, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, family counsellor, chaplaincy team, Housekeeping staff, and volunteers.Central to all of this are the patients and their families.
Learning opportunities at Woking Hospice:
1. Pain and symptom control in palliative care. Use of drugs and syringe drivers.
2. Communication with dying patients and their relatives. Some insight into counselling and use of counselling skills. Care of the family in bereavement. Access to the family counsellor.
3. Multidisciplinary team working including meetings, visits to the community with the Macmillan nurses, OTs and physiotherapists.
4. Holistic care, the total care of the dying patient. Physical, psychological, emotional, social and spiritual care.
5. Essential nursing care, including pressure area care and oral care.
6. Assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patients' care.
7. Use of the Liverpool Care Pathway for the end of life.
8. Discharge planning.
9. Day care.
10. Teaching and education including one-to-one mentorship and teaching sessions.
11. Complementary therapies, their place within palliative care.
12. Management of wound using aseptic technique.
13. Stoma care in liaison with specialist nurse.
